ADHD, Learning Disabilities, and Krill Oil

Have ou ever wondered whether or not ADHD was something that you could control with an over the counter supplement? Of course, it's never as easy as it sounds but there's something that you need to know about krill oil and ADHD. We've done plenty of research on this topic. Enough that we can certainly provide some feedback on this topic. 

Krill Oil and ADHD: How Are They Connected?

Since omega-3s are considered to be an essential acid for the human body, it's not much of a stretch to make the connection between having a suitable amount of essential fatty acids and maintaining proper brain function. According to Psychology Today, the brain has a huge number of cell membranes, and the content of omega-3s in the brain could easily exceed the content of omega-3s in cell membranes throughout the remainder of the body.

Specifically, polyunsaturated fatty acids, PUFAs, found in omega-3 fatty acids, such as DHA, are found in higher concentrations within the brain. Take a look at how Krill Oil may benefit those who suffer from learning disabilities and ADHD.

Development of the Brain During Childhood

The brain grows more during childhood than any other time in life. Essentially, fatty acids, specifically docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), is found in greater concentrations within a child's brain in normal brain function, explains the publication, the Relationship of Docosahexaenoic Acid With Learning and Behavior and Healthy Children: A Review. 

Within the study, researchers observed improvements in learning and appropriate behaviors when a sufficient quantity of DHA was available for the brain. Furthermore, participants in the study seemed to increase in reading and spelling skills, and similar observations were seen in healthy children as well. Ultimately, a lack of DHA, or DHA deficiency, was shown to exacerbate the potential learning problems as seen in those with learning disabilities.

ADHD and Omega-3 Fatty Acids

ADHD is believed to be the result of certain environmental factors, impaired neurological development, medical conditions, and other unknown factors, explains the Mayo Clinic. Many different treatment options for ADHD exist; however, some alternative medicinal therapies have been applied to treating ADHD.

These alternatives medicinal remedies may include yoga, meditation, and dietary changes, as explained by the Mayo Clinic. In another study, reduced symptoms of inattention appeared after omega-3 fatty acid supplementation through the diet was given to boys with and without ADHD. Researchers began to study how omega-3 fatty acid supplementation would compare to the treatment of ADHD with stimulants.

In the study, researchers reviewed what participants seem to have varying severity of ADHD. The specific types of omega-3 fatty acids used in the study included EPA and DHA, with your two of the primary omega-3s found in Krill Oil. Following the study, participants seemed to experience a reduction in the symptoms of ADHD and participants with minimal levels or degrees of ADHD experienced reduced hyperactive symptoms without impacting normal brain development.

Studies to further uncover how omega-3s may benefit learning disabilities in children continue, and additional study results are expected to be published in February explains ClinicalTrials.gov. However, much of the existing evidence seems to suggest treatment with omega-3s, specifically DHA and EPA, would be of benefit to children suffering from these learning disabilities.
