Heart Health Benefits of Krill Oil

Heart Health Benefits of Krill Oil

If you were to bring up omega-3s for health in a physician’s office, you would probably start talking about heart health. Heart health encompasses more than simply working to correct poor cholesterol levels. Your cardiovascular system (CVS) includes your heart, your arteries, your veins, and your lymphatic system. Together, the CVS and lymphatic system help keep your body functioning by providing a supply of nutrients and oxygen to your cells. Take a look at how omega-3s can benefit your CVS and improve your overall health.

Omega-3 fatty acids (omega-3s) are a type of fat that your body needs to obtain from the diet. Unfortunately, eating multiple servings of fish is not always an option, and Niveau™ products can help supplement this issue.

What Is CHD and How It's Related To Your Cardiovascular System

Congestive heart disease (CHD) occurs when the CVS has become weakened due to hardening of the arteries. Essentially, plaque buildup in the arteries leads to rigidity, which makes the heart work harder to maintain an appropriate blood flow throughout the body. In a healthy individual, the arteries would stretch and constrict slightly with each beat.

Since the arteries become rigid, a condition known as atherosclerosis, this assisting action is greatly reduced. In the case of coronary arteries, which supply oxygen and nutrients to the muscle in the heart, atherosclerosis reduces blood flow to the heart. The heart may become enlarged and start to survive off of minimal nutrition, a precursor to a major cardiac event. If the coronary artery becomes completely shut off, a myocardial infarction or a heart attack occurs.

How Do Omega-3s Help Prevent CHD?

The culprit behind CHD is poor cholesterol levels. Triglycerides and low-density lipoproteins (LDLs) are the “bad” cholesterol, which may stick to the artery walls and attract platelets and other debris. High-density lipoproteins (HDLs) are a “good” type cholesterol, which helps to keep blood flowing properly.

Experts believe omega-3s help to prevent CHD by lowering the risk for changes in the heart’s electrical rhythm, or arrhythmias, asserts the University of Rochester Medical Center. Omega-3s have also been shown to lower triglyceride levels, lower the growth rate of plaque in the blood vessels, reduce blood pressure, and help prevent inflammation in the CVS.

What About Mercury and Heart Health?

Although the American Heart Association recommends two servings of fish per week to obtain adequate omega-3s for heart health, this comes with a caveat. Some fish may contain high levels of mercury, which is poisonous. Yet, the need for omega-3s does not evaporate due to a concern over toxic levels of mercury in fish. Children, pregnant women, nursing women, and those with compromised immune systems must beware of what types of fish they eat.

For example, shark, swordfish, king mackerel, and tilefish fall into the category of fish with potentially high levels of mercury. However, much of this concern could be alleviated by choosing to take an omega-3 supplement, such as a Krill Oil Supplement, in place of eating fish on a recurring, frequent basis.

Omega-3s, specifically DHA and EPA, have been extensively studied to determine their health benefits for the cardiovascular system. By understanding how these omega-3s can help prevent congestive heart failure, you can take a proactive approach to avoiding cardiac problems later in life. Basically, omega-3s could be the determining factor in preventing a heart attack or stroke.
