Since this results in a lower surface area of exposure of the neuron, the impulse is generated and carried on faster and more accurately. Essentially, the myelin sheath allows the impulse to jump from node to node, which helps ensure rapid, accurate transmission of brain signals to the appropriate location.

What Is Myelin?

Myelin is a fatty material that is comprised of fatty acids, such as omega-3s, and protein fibers, asserts WebMD. However, the glial cells are incapable of generating this myelin sheath without a proper supply of nutrients, and the body’s inability to create omega-3s exemplifies the need to ingest omega-3s from the diet.
