A Unique Approach to Male Reproductive Health

What comes with aging? Many people believe aging accompanies the loss of overall youthfulness, beauty, and satisfaction with health. For men, age may carry an increased risk of impotence, male reproductive health problems, or even benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). None of these potential ailments fall into what society deems “aging gracefully.”  Yet, some claim dietary restrictions and lifestyle changes can improve male reproductive health problems, asserts the University of Maryland Medical Center. For men, flaxseed oil may be of potential benefit in reducing the incidence of BPH, increasing the male reproductive hormone, testosterone, and fostering proper health of the cardiovascular system, which is critical to maintaining health of the reproductive system.

What Causes BPH?

BPH may occur for a variety of reasons, such as excessive weight gain, obesity, diabetes, poor cardiovascular health, or increased risk of developing prostate cancer. In men, the prostate-specific antigen, or PSA, is the hormone produced by the prostate that indicates the relative size of the organ. When the prostate grows or becomes enlarged, the level of PSA in the blood rises. Unfortunately, BPH means the condition has not necessarily reached the point to reduce or completely exclude the urethra. When this occlusion occurs, men may have trouble emptying their bladders. According to the Mayo Clinic, the exact cause of BPH remains unknown. However, some researchers suggest the answer may lie in a healthy diet.

How Does the Diet Impact BPH?

In the publication, Starch Intake May Increase Risk For Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia, researchers Dr. Laura Barclay and Dr. Desiree lie, sought to uncover how diet impacts the risk for developing BPH. in a study of 1,369 patients with BPH and 1,451 additional control patients, researchers closely monitored the food intake of the participants. Surprisingly, the amount of starches, such as those found in breads, pastas, and baked goods, seemed to be directly related to increased incidence of BPH. However, those participants who consumed a high diet of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) seemed to have a decreased incidence of developing BPH.

What Do PUFAs Have to Do With Flaxseed Oil?

As explained in multiple health publications and the University of Maryland Medical Center, flaxseed oil is a major source of omega-3 fatty acids. Basically, flaxseed oil may be an option to obtain more omega-3s in the diet when higher sources, such as krill oil, fish oil, and seafood, are not available. This is especially true for those who may have an allergy to seafood or products derived from the ocean.

Aging gracefully remains one of the most common misnomers in our culture, and men and women face the challenges of growing older. These challenges range from macular degeneration to heart disease to poor reproductive health. Fortunately, dietary changes and the introduction of an omega-3 supplement, such as flaxseed oil, may be able to help reduce the incidence of an enlarged prostate, which increases male reproductive health throughout the proverbial “golden” years.
